About Our School

This Year's Theme

This year's Ottawa Catholic School Board theme is Sent to be the Good News (Luke 4:14-20).

Mission Statement

In partnership with home, parish and community, the Ottawa Catholic School Board ensures that the teachings and values of Jesus Christ are integrated in all aspects of school life. By providing the necessary resources for quality Catholic education, the Board supports the development of lifelong learners striving for academic excellence in a nurturing, safe and vibrant community. All individuals are challenged to become responsible and contributing citizens in an increasingly complex and diverse world.

General Information

Opened in 1975, St. Martin de Porres Catholic School is located in the Glen Cairn community in the city of Kanata. St. Martin de Porres offers a quality JK to 6 education to students, ensuring that Catholic teachings and values are woven into the curriculum. Religious events are observed through in-class activities, special school-wide projects, and with liturgies and masses. We are affilitated with Holy Redeemer Church, and are fortunate to have Father Pierre Champoux presiding over our masses.

We pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and comfortable school environment for students and staff: teachers display student artwork and projects in the hallways, staff organize and create a theme bulletin board display inside the main entrance, and students decorate the gym for the liturgies and masses. Starting in 2011, the school EcoSquad has been organizing and collecting organic waste from classrooms and educating everyone on how to waste less and save our planet.

The last few years have seen some major changes at St. Martin de Porres school. In 2009, the school was selected as one of the first schools to offer full-day kindergarten which has proven to be a great success. The 2012-13 school year saw the start of the French Immersion program. Every year, students are benefiting from more advanced technology, such as the use of Smart Board technology in the classroom, and the availability of WiFi, Chromebooks, Ipads and Netbooks in the school.  In September 2012, the school library was converted to the Learning Commons where students have access to various technology to aid in their studies.

We are fortunate that every year we have volunteers at St. Martin de Porres: parents/guardians, grandparents, relatives, and high school community service students. These volunteers help with special lunch days, special events, ice skating days, field trips, the annual book fair, sports practices and tournaments, tutoring students, and assisting teachers. Our volunteer Parent Council is dedicated to fundraising and event planning. We also have volunteers from within our own student body. Our students volunteer in various capacities: front reception duties, kindergarten helpers, peer mediators, and EcoSquad members. These students contribute to the school as a whole and also serve as excellent role models for the younger students.

At St. Martin de Porres School, we believe that it is important to recognize student achievement, participation and excellence. The following awards are presented annually: Bernice Carr Award, Marion McAteer Award, Sharron Quinn Award and the Director of Education award; and for Gr. 6 students, the following awards: female and male athletes, French Excellence, Good Citizen, Principal's Award, Public Speaking. We also believe it is important for students to excel in a group environment.

We regularly acknowledge student participation with special certificates, and exemplary behavior with Caring Coupons. At monthly assemblies, students can show their classmates and staff their special talent or recent achievement, and share good news. Our students, under teacher and staff leadership, work exceptionally well as a team and can be proud of these achievements: recipient of the School Board Environmental Award over 8 consecutive years, and recognition as a provincial EcoSchool by Ontario EcoSchools. In 2015-16 we were awarded EcoSchool Gold Status.

We welcome any questions you may have. Our contact information is listed on the Home page.
